Who Am I?

My life (in a few words)

I have grown up in an area of the United States that some call “Vacationland” but I simply call it home. Born and raised in the small college town of Gorham, my interests always gravitated towards the University of Southern Maine. Those interests evolved from strict academic (although, you can often find me with my nose in a book) into writing. Since the age of 12 when I first began reading John Steinbeck, Prose has captured my attention. Once I got older and began reading some creative nonfiction works such as Peter Matthiessen’s the Snow Leopard and Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-aid Acid Test, I realized I could combine my love for adventure and exploration with my love of writing. This website is where you will find my fictional works, documentation of my travels, the exploration of subcultures, and a bit of photography. I hope to show everyone how a lifestyle of exploration is possible. In Maine, there are two major industries, Lobstering and Lumber. Having an irrational fear of a tree falling on me and not enjoying crustacean company, I desperately hope this writing thing works out.

Literary Influences

As mentioned above, my love for literature began with John Steinbeck. I was homeschooled growing up and one day my father handed me a copy of Mice and Men; I couldn’t put the book down. The combination of love and frustration George felt for Lenny hit a core nerve in 12 year old Nick. When summer rolled around, I read almost every book Steinbeck wrote.

At the age of 19, I discovered the Beat Generation. I fell in love with the spontaneous prose of Jack Kerouac. His juxtaposition of Bhuddism and Catholicism, Urban and Rural Environments, Introversion vs Extroversion, and run on sentences that would make any English teacher cry. That love for the Beat writers extended into Gary Synder and Allen Ginsberg’s poetry, William S. Burroughs surreal novels, along with every written work by Kerouac.
